What does Google's store widget display?

The Google Store Widget is a small badge that appears on your storefront when you enable it through the Shopify Theme Editor.

What it actually displays depends on your store's standing with Google and that's determined entirely by Google, not by our app.

How the widget works

The widget is rendered by Google's own script. When it loads on your store, Google determines what to show based on your store's current performance data in Google Merchant Center. Our app simply enables the widget on your site and lets you control its position and margins, the content inside it is Google's to decide.

What the widget might show

Depending on your store's review history and overall quality scores, the widget may display different things:

  • "Rating not available" - This is what you'll see if Google doesn't yet have enough review data for your store. In most cases, you need around 100 eligible reviews in a rolling 12-month period for a specific country before a rating appears.

  • Your seller rating - Once you've accumulated enough reviews, Google will display your aggregate star rating within the widget.

  • A Store Quality badge - Google operates a Store Quality program that evaluates merchants across several areas including shipping, returns, website quality, and customer ratings.

Merchants who meet Google's performance thresholds may be awarded badges such as the "Top Quality Store" designation, which will appear within the widget automatically.

You don't need to apply for or configure any of these states - Google handles it all based on your store's data. As your performance changes, what the widget displays may update accordingly.

What happens when a visitor clicks the widget?

When someone clicks the widget, it opens to show your store's quality information and links through to your ratings landing page on Google. This behaviour is built into Google's widget and cannot be changed or disabled.

How Google Customer Reviews contributes

Collecting reviews through the Google Customer Reviews program (which our app facilitates) is one of the inputs to your seller rating, and your seller rating is one of the factors Google considers when determining what to display in the widget.

The more customers who opt in and complete the survey, the faster your review data will build.

However, the widget's content reflects a broader picture of your store's reputation and Google draws on multiple data sources beyond just Google Customer Reviews.
