Send a direct link to the Google Customer Reviews opt-in page (app proxy page)

Written by Steve Jones

After a customer completes their purchase, our checkout app block appears on the Thank You page and Order Status page, asking if they would be willing to opt in to the Google Customer Reviews survey. If they click Yes, they're taken to the survey opt-in page (app proxy page).

For many stores, that's all you need. But if you'd like to reach customers beyond the post-purchase experience, our app can also generate a unique direct link to the opt-in page for any order, ready to drop into any email that you send.

Our app can generate a unique direct link for any order that takes the customer straight to the Google Customer Reviews opt-in page on your store. This link can be placed in any email you send, giving you full control over when and how you ask customers to opt in.

Why use a direct link?

The checkout app block works well, but it relies on the customer noticing and responding to the prompt during the post-purchase experience. A direct link opens up additional opportunities to reach customers at a time when they may be more willing to opt-in.

Here are some of the key benefits:

Reach customers after delivery

Instead of asking for the customer to opt-in to a survey immediately after purchase, you can send the opt-in link once the order has been delivered and the customer has had time to form an opinion. This often leads to higher-quality engagement.

Add it to your existing email flows

The link can be dropped into any email you already send to customers, whether that's a Shopify notification email, a Klaviyo post-purchase flow, an Omnisend campaign, or any other email platform. It works anywhere you can include a link and have access to the customer's unique Shopify Order ID.

Use it with Shopify email notifications

You can add the link to Shopify's built-in email notifications, such as the Shipping Confirmation or Delivery Confirmation templates. This means every customer automatically receives an invitation to opt in to the Google Customer Reviews survey without you needing to send a separate email.

Use it with marketing automation platforms

If you use Klaviyo, Omnisend, Drip, Mailchimp, or any other email marketing platform, you can include the link in your post-purchase email sequences. This is particularly useful if you already have a "How was your order?" or shipping notification. You can add the Google Customer Reviews opt-in alongside it.

Works with orders placed outside of Shopify's checkout

If you take orders through a third-party checkout, a headless storefront, or any other system that creates orders in Shopify, the direct link still works. As long as the order exists in Shopify, a link can be generated for it.

No app or theme changes required

Adding the link to your emails doesn't require any changes to your Shopify theme or checkout configuration. It's simply a URL that you include in your email content.

How it works

Each link is unique to a specific store and order. When a customer clicks it, they're taken to the app proxy page on your store's domain, where the Google Customer Reviews opt-in pop-up is displayed automatically. The page pulls the order details; including the customer's email, delivery country, and estimated delivery date; and passes them to Google, just as it would if the customer had opted in via the checkout app block.

The experience for the customer is exactly the same as if they had clicked "Yes" on the Thank You page. They see the same opt-in page, the same Google popup, and the same confirmation.

Can I use it alongside the checkout app block?

Yes. The direct link and the checkout app block work independently of each other. You can use both at the same time to give customers multiple opportunities to opt in, once during checkout and again via a follow-up email.

If a customer has already opted in via the checkout flow, clicking the email link will simply show them the opt-in page again. Google handles deduplication on their side, so there's no risk of a customer receiving the survey twice.

How do I get set up?

We generate the direct link details for your store including the unique identifier and the URL structure you'll need. We'll also provide an example snippet to show you how the link can be used in your Shopify email notification templates or your email marketing platform.

To get started, just get in touch with us via the support chat inside the app to request your URL structure. When getting in touch, please let us know which email platform or Shopify notification template you'd like to add the link to.

We'll send you everything you need, along with instructions for adding it to your emails.

Things to keep in mind

  • The link must be unique to each order. We'll explain how this works when we send you the setup details. In most cases, it involves a simple dynamic variable that your email platform handles automatically.

  • The opt-in page is hosted on your store's domain via Shopify's app proxy, so it inherits your store's theme and branding. If you'd like to adjust the styling of this page, see Styling the survey opt-in proxy page.

  • As with all Google Customer Reviews opt-ins, Google decides when to send the survey based on the estimated delivery date. For older orders where the delivery date has already passed, the survey is typically sent relatively quickly after the customer opts in. See Can customers opt in after their order has been delivered? for more detail.
