Can I track who opted in or view individual responses?

This is a common question, and the short answer is: no. Neither our app nor Google Merchant Center provides individual-level data about who opted in, who received a survey, or who completed one. Here's why.

Google's privacy-first approach

Google Customer Reviews is designed as a privacy-first, aggregated feedback program. To protect shoppers' personal data and comply with global privacy regulations (including GDPR), Google does not share individual-level information with merchants.

All reporting in Google Merchant Center is anonymised and summarised at the account or country level. You can see overall performance, such as total opt-ins, surveys sent, response rates, and average ratings, but you cannot identify specific customers or orders.

This approach ensures that participation remains confidential and that feedback is collected in a way that is safe, compliant, and trusted by shoppers worldwide.

Why our app can't track this either

The Google Customer Reviews opt-in pop-up is rendered inside a Google-controlled iframe, served from Google's own domain. Because the iframe comes from a different origin to your store, the browser's same-origin policy prevents any JavaScript on your site from:

  • Accessing the content inside the iframe

  • Attaching click listeners to the opt-in buttons

  • Reading whether the customer selected "Yes" or "No"

  • Receiving any event when the customer interacts with the survey

This is intentional on Google's part. The opt-in is treated as a direct interaction between Google and the customer, specifically to prevent merchants from tracking or identifying who consented or who later left a review. It's a core part of their privacy model and aligns with GDPR expectations around consent and anonymised feedback.

What you can see

While individual tracking isn't possible, you can monitor the overall health of your Google Customer Reviews program in Google Merchant Center.

The dashboard shows aggregated metrics including opt-ins received, surveys offered, survey responses received, and your store rating.
